HIV Gel That Cuts Herpes Risk in Half in the Works

There is good news on the sexual health front today. A vaginal gel that is known to reduce women’s risk of AIDS infection is even more effective in decreasing genital herpes.

The new study conducted by European researchers of a microbicide gel showed a 39 percent reduction in HIV infections, and unexpectedly that herpes risk was lowered by 51 percent as well. Although the gel was originally developed to fight AIDS in Africa, this new finding means the treatment could be useful to fight both diseases in the U.S. as well, where an estimated 48 percent of black women have herpes.

“This could be incredibly helpful,” said Dr. Jeanne Marrazzo, a herpes expert from the University of Washington’s medical school. “Protection that a woman can control is the holy grail in this field. It’s hard for me to believe that something that protects against both HIV and herpes wouldn’t be appealing to a lot of young American women.”

It would be hard for me to believe that too, however we may never have the chance to use the gel. An executive at Gilead, the company that makes tenofovir, the anti-AIDS drug that is the gel’s active ingredient, said the company is debating whether to spend the millions of dollars needed to get the gel approved in the American market. If they do go ahead, it would be at least three to four years before the company could even submit data to the Food and Drug Administration. Sigh.

No matter how many years it takes, it should be criminal for the company to even debate not spending the money to bring the gel to the U.S. where it is clearly needed. Safety and acceptability tests for the gel were done in several countries including the United States, and American heterosexual couples did not find the gel unpleasant; nor did South African couples.

As far more people suffer from herpes than HIV — as many as 20% of sexually active adults — the FDA and Gilead need to move forward on bringing this product to the American market.

What do you think about this new prevention method? Would it be useful for women in the United States?

Jim Jones and his longtime manager Yandy Smith have parted ways and Jones’ fiancé Chrissy Lampkin is allegedly at the root of the separation.

Yandy’s reps recently confirmed with theybf.com that she is no longer representing the Dip Set rapper after a seven-year business relationship, partly due to conflicts with Lampkin.

One source even says the two women threw hands during a recent “Love and Hip Hop” taping in Miami at Club Cameo.

Yandy’s reps told theybf.com they, “cannot directly comment on this story due to the face that the allegedly happen during taping and the girls and management are under non disclosure agreements.”

The paperback edition of Jay-Z’s Decoded hits shelves on November 1

The paperback edition of Jay-Z’s Decoded hits shelves on November 1, but today, RR got an exclusive excerpt of him explaining which songs he chose to decipher.

Let me go back to the beginning: I sat in my studio one night at the start of the process of writing this book, trying to decide which songs to include. Throughout the night, different people came through the studio, including some of the people I’ve worked with closest throughout my career—my engineer, Young Guru; Memphis Bleek; Pharrell; Steve Stoute; dream hampton; and others. I was taking a break from finishing up the Blueprint 3 album, and hung out there for hours while people came and went, playing songs and telling stories, some of which made it into this book. Memphis Bleek told his side of the story of how we worked together on “Coming of Age,” Young Guru remembered that moving moment when Scarface rewrote his verses for “This Can’t Be Life,” Steve told us about how young corporate guys he knew were psyching themselves up for business meetings by listening to “Public Service Announcement” (and dream remembered the Dave Chappelle “When ‘Keeping It Real’ Goes Wrong” bit where a character did the same thing and got fired).

I loved talking about the stories behind the songs, but as we were listening to the songs that night I found myself drawn over and over again to the words—the metaphors and rhythms and structural choices, not the gossip behind the songs. It was the little things that got me nodding my head, lost in the songs like I was hearing them for the first time. For instance, at one point Guru cued up “What We Do,” a song by Freeway with me and Beanie Sigel on it, and set it rumbling through the studio. In an instant, I was lost in Freeway’s remarkable flow. Do yourself a favor and listen to the first verse of that song, where Free ends every bar with some variation of the word “up” or “down.” It’s a simple thing, but the flow it creates is mesmerizing. I was still in the studio, but I was gone. That, I thought, is what an MC in the zone can do—turn language as simple as “up” and “down” into a magic spell.

Rick Ross cancels another gig

Someone must have talked some sense into Rick Ross because he's really starting to take it easy...

Rick Ross, who was photographed outside a Memphis Wing Stop hours after suffering two separate mid air seizures in route to a concert [click here if you missed that] , has canceled his gig at Georgia State University this Friday.

It's just as well, considering there was a planned protest against Rick's concert by students at GSU who object to their tuition funding his performance when they don't support his message.

Student Ayesha Kirk told WSBTV,
"We don’t understand why the lyrics are this way. Why is this an artist that we support? Why are we spending thousands of dollars on this message?”

“He is known for raps that discuss drugs, money and sex. In his song titled ’9 Piece’ Ross says, ‘I’m selling dope straight off my iPhone.’”
